The LIUNA Training and Education Fund is an integral part of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), one of the oldest and most respected labour unions in the world.


LIUNA Training develops the curriculum, certifies the instructors, and supports a network of over 70 affiliated training centers throughout the United States and Canada. Our programs are used to train Construction Craft Workers and Cement Finishers in the many different career opportunities available to them as a member of LIUNA.


LiUNA Local 1089 Training Centre opens the door to several opportunities, helping apprentices and journey workers improve and add to their skills, advance their careers and provide a living wage with benefits.


Each year, LIUNA is strengthened through Red Seal Apprenticeship Training, Health & Safety Training and Industry Certification - which are taught by LIUNA’s network of highly skilled and highly qualified instructors.


Affiliated LIUNA Training instructors participate in skill standards-driven, competency-based technical training classes in various industry topics using our accredited curriculum. This ensures that instructors have the knowledge and skills necessary to teach these portions of the trade to LIUNA’s membership.

Together we are dedicated to serving Local 1089 with comprehensive training programs to ensure our members’ proficiency in required skills to safely supply the construction industry in Sarnia-Lambton.

  • Certified Instructors

    LiUNA Local 1089 Instructors are embedded into a structured high quality, rigorous instructor training and certification program (ANSI Certification). 


    LiUNA Training, together with training directors, instructors, and educators, have worked diligently to create a set of world-class instructional standards that provide the foundation for the Instructor Training and Certification Program. 


    Instructors are measured against these standards to establish a baseline of supportive action, a starting point of achievement and an individual plan for life-long improvement. LiUNA Training has also aligned its program to these standards to help instructors gain the knowledge and skills needed to meet and exceed these standards.  

  • Qualified Instructors

    The LiUNA Training Instructor Training and Certification Program, established in 2012, provides recognition to LiUNA instructors who have demonstrated mastery of the instructional standards in designated areas – teaching, math, reading and computer. 


    Credential Maintenance is a required process by which LiUNA Training Certified Instructors renew their credentials every year through continuing education or teaching experience. 


    Only actively employed, affiliated LiUNA training fund Instructors are eligible to submit documentation for credential maintenance. 


    The renewal process allows LiUNA Instructors to continue developing professionally, keep abreast of the most current trends on education and training, and improve job performance.

  • The Instructor Commitment

    LiUNA Training certified instructors believe that the quality of their work directly influences the success of LiUNA members and signatory contractors. 


    Certified instructors are responsible for building their knowledge of sound educational practice and are obligated to implement those practices in their classrooms whenever they teach. 


    Certified instructors recognize their primary responsibility to the trainee and the development of the trainee’s full potential. A certified instructor engages in continuing professional development and keeps current with industry research, technology, encourages and supports the use of resources that best serve the interests and needs of LiUNA members and the industry.


    LiUNA Local 1089 is a Certified Training Delivery Agency (TDA) for the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD) for

    Construction Craft Worker - 450 A 

    Cement (Concrete) Finisher - 244G.
