Greetings! I am pleased to inform the membership about some of our recent developments being implemented at Local 1089’s World Class Training Centre. Covid-19 has been a colossal challenge for our members and their families on so many levels. LiUNA Training Directors across the province have been diligently working together to ensure the best Training Centres in Ontario are safe, operational and efficiently delivering all aspects of apprenticeship for Construction Craft Worker & Cement (Concrete) Finisher, IEC courses, Health & Safety and skills-based courses. Local 1089 training department has been extremely busy proudly developing curriculum in-house: 3 Day Cutting & Torching Course Certification CH – 02 Propane in Construction Cement (Concrete) Finisher Level 1 Construction Craft Worker Level 1 & 2 Implementation of Construction Craft Worker Textbook 8-Week Pipelaying Course (Sewer & Watermain) Traffic Control Person (Improved) Our training facilities offer 26,000 square feet of space, fully equipped including a 5,000 kg overhead gantry crane, mini-excavator, skid steers, powered elevated platforms, scaffolding, dura-forms, sewer & watermain pipes/parts, cement hand tools & power tools and a mobile training unit. Over the last couple years, we have been very successful with government grant proposals which have provided many of the above-mentioned tools and equipment necessary to provide world-class training. Working with our Government Relations Director, Jason McMichael, we have secured almost four hundred thousand dollars’ worth of grants in the last two years. As your Training Director, I have worked continuously with Trainers Tony Valenti and Shawn Lester to put these tools and resources to work, providing second to none training to our members daily. Local 1089 training staff continues to develop and create skills-based training courses to meet the demands and broad-based needs of our contractor and employer partners. This is your Training Centre, we are your team, and we are committed to providing you the skills and abilities to ensure Local 1089 is known as the highest skilled, safest work force in Lambton County.
